Can I write a SmartObject that connects to a SQL Server table in BlackPearl and deploy it to a customers site where they are currently using BlackPoint? Or is there an easier way to connect to a SQL Server database using BlackPoint?

Developing in Blackpearl and deploying to Blackpoint is not advisable. This will give you a headache. It is possible to dev on Blackpoint and deploy to Blackpearl but not the other way round. The reason Blackpearl has lost of functionality that doesn’t exist in Blackpoint. In Blakcpoint you can register a SQL service through Central Administration > K2 for Sharepoint > Data Management > Manage SQL SmartObject HTH Vernon
