I have a workflow which passes to several approvers. The initiator of the workflow is the requester. Once the requester saves the item, his permission is changed to "Read Only" as not to allow him to edit the item during the approval process. Only the current approver is given "Contributor rights" so he can act on the request. However, we noticed that after the 1st approval, the "item permission" workflow action giving "Contributor rights" to the next approver does not work. We found out that the initiator (requester) need to have "Contributor" rights in order for the item permission action to work. We already tried the "Run as an owner" under Common found in some of actions, but it still does not work. Are there still other possible solutions to this?

During the design of your workflows you should consider to use the "Commit pending changes" action.
Take a look those design considerations on Emily Billing 's post >>>Designing your Workflow - Commit Pending Changes Action NW2010 & NW2013
