Request failed with status: Service Unavailable.

Hi,

we're using SP2013 SP1 with Nintex2013 on our DEV system and want to add the workflow action "Call web service".

After entering the web service url https://domain/website/_vti_bin/lists.asmx (or any other SP web service) with valid credentials, you have to click on "Refresh" to populate the web service methods to the drop down list box.

This fails with the error message: "Request failed with status: Service Unavailable."

call_ws_error.png

As you can see on the picture, we are not able to view the methods of the web service.

Some things I already checked:

- Accessing the web service via browser works fine!

- Loopback check is already disabled on WFE and APP server.

- Nintex was installed with the same service account as the SP farm (the account, that runs the CA application pool).

Any suggestions?

Kind regards

Markus

Re: Request failed with status: Service Unavailable.

Hi Markus

Interested to know if when you tried accessing the service via the browser (with no proxy settings), were you logged into one of the web front end servers, or were you on your client machine?

When the Call Web Service dialog tries to connect to the web service, the request originates from the server hosting the dialog, not from the client accessing it. So attempting to access the service from the same location is the best way to compare.

Also ensure you are using the exact same URL in the dialog and in your test, not an alternative access URL.

Normally, if there was a connection issue, I would expect to see a response such as unauthorized, or forbidden. Service unavailable means it is connecting OK, but the service is down, so I would definitely expect to see similar behaviour from any client!

Re: Request failed with status: Service Unavailable.

Hi James,

thanks for the quick reply.

I get this error on my Client as well as on the WFE, where the web application is hosted (no proxy in IE).

ULS drops a strange issue:

Re: Request failed with status: Service Unavailable.

I had a look, I get the 'List does not exist...' message as well, its not related to the 'service unavailable' message you are seeing. The 'list does not exist' message appears to be to do with it being a site workflow, probably a bug somewhere that's not affecting anything apart from adding a log message. If you try with a list workflow, you will not see the message in the logs - You will probably still get service unavailable, but its probably worth confirming.

When logged into the server, IE, no proxy, did you try and connect to the URL directly in IE without using Call Web Service?

Can you also try connecting in the browser by adding ?WSDL on the end of the URL and seeing if that works or not?e.g. https://site/_vti_bin/lists.asmx?WSDL

Re: Request failed with status: Service Unavailable.

Hi James,

thanks for reply!

Yes it was a site workflow so the 'list doesn't exist' message makes sense. But even with a list workflow I'm getting the same error.

Yes, accessing the web service directly via browser works!

Adding '?wsdl' after the web service url doesn't change anything. Works fine in browser, but same message in nintex.

Here are the latest messages from the uls, that hopefully contain some useful information concerning the issue:

Re: Request failed with status: Service Unavailable.

Solved the problem with setting up a new SP farm (and performing content database migration).

Not sure if is was a permission or patch issue

Thanks anyway!
