Workflow does not start for Powershell created item

I have a powershell script that runs under service account, it creates an item with the attachment in the list. Lists has conditional workflow, however it never starts, when the condition is satisfied. Item does get created with the attachment, but workflow would not start

The ULS logs shows this

As far as I understand Items created with System Account (either from workflow or PowerShell) indeed do not trigger workflows. for this you need to use a regular account (e.g. Power User). Not entirely sure if you can change a setting in Central Admin to allow System Account to trigger workflows.

Hi,

is this SharePoint on premises? If so you can check if the following helps:

In Central Administration -> Nintex Workflow Management -> Global Settings

enable Allow "System Account" to trigger conditional workflows.

 

In your Workflow Settings under "Start when items are created", the workflow needs to be set to Conditional for it to work.

What permissions did you give to the service account? You said you gave it minimal permissions. As your message says "Access denied" it could be that it is not allowed to write to your source list (if necessary), your target list, the workflow history and if applicable the workflow task lists. If you give the system account write permissions to those lists, does it work?

The account has contribute rights, I have also tested it where I made it a site owner, stil item gets created, attachment is attached, but the workflow does not start

A workflow can not be started on an item created by a System account as Jean-Pierre correctly pointed out, it should still fail even if you add conditions because you are still trying to start workflow on item created by System account... Try setting your condition on item Modified to see if this makes a difference. 

I had a similar issue where I have an event receiver which creates a list item when an email is received so I created a Site Workflow which runs on a schedule to look for new items added and then sets a field which triggers the conditional start on my list Workflow, unfortunately even with the help of Nintex support we could not get the start Workflow on list item action to work from the Site Workflow although if this works for you it is also an option.

Sorry to hit an old thread but just to clear something up: a service account and the system account are NOT the same thing.  That wouldn't be the cause here.

 

Powershell can be run as any account.  


Question would be does the service account have at least contribute rights? Also, were you using CSOM or SOM?
