Is there a way to pull the first 10 characters from a Multiline text field and populate a single line text field?

Trying to find a way to grab the first 10 characters of a multiline field in a list and use it to populate a single line field in a list.

do you work with responsive or classic form design?

in responsive form you could do that with 'set value' rule.

in classic form this can only be done with javascript.

could you provide more details how should it work?

do you need it just on form load? or triggered by an event/action (button)?

do you need it in NEW and/or EDIT form?

multiline field is just a plaintect or reach text?

If you want the Single lines of text column updated at the time of form submission based on the first 10 characters of a Multi lines of text control on the form I would use a Calculated value control with a subString function connected to the Single Lines of text column.
Either that or have a workflow run after the form is submitted to do the same thing.

Thank you Simon, any chance you might have a link to some resources on the subString function?
