In SharePoint 2013, I have a brand new document library with some metadata columns. When I upload a document, it will ask to provide values to metadata columns. If I don't provide values to those mandatory fields, the document gets uploaded but it will be in checked out to the user. But if I provide the values, it will be checked in. This is the default behavior of SharePoint. Once I create smartobject  and smart forms for this same library using K2, this default behavior is overwritten. No matter what the document will be checked out. Is there a way to fix this issue without using workflow.

I have not seen this behavior specifically but you dont need a workfllow. You can just add a form rule on the sumit button to check the document in. Check in is one of the methods for each document library can can be sued from the form.

I hope this helps.
