We're receiving this error intermittently on connected workflows. It creates errors each time and we're having to manually stop the offending workflow and start the next. Any ideas?

Otherwise please try to have a look at the ULS log and see if there are any related errors shown. If there is nothing useful shown there, we would need more information on what your workflows do and how they interact with eachother.
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything in those solutions that helped. The ULS log is what I originally looked at and what the error in the subject of this thread comes from.
The workflow has an action that starts another workflow. This creates errors, with different workflows. There are also workflows that get stuck in the "In Progress" state even several hours after the last action has completed.
by saying you receive this error intermittently you mean there are times where your workflow(s) are running completely fine?
Do you have support with Nintex? By sending them data from your workflow log database, they can have a much deeper look into what is going on in your environment.
Did you ever resolve this? We are receiving a similar issue.
