We've updated the Developing a Custom Service article based on some problems with the initial example.
If you created a SmartObject Service to connect to LOB data based on the first version, please take a look at the article (http://www.k2underground.com/files/folders/technical_product_documents/entry21898.aspx) and example code (http://www.k2underground.com/files/folders/technical_product_documents/entry21899.aspx) for a slightly different approach that does not use a singleton to connect the service to the service instance configuration data. The original approach could lead to configuration data being shared across service instances.
