How can I use a value from a SQL Request Control to trigger another SQL Request?

Jump to solution

I have a form that is using a SQL Request Control to pull back data from a SQL Customer Database and populate a dropdown for Customer selection.  We want to use this selection to run other SQL Requests so that we can pull back and display other information from that Customer database such as customer address, customer country, customer POC,  account manager, contract date, Technical Lead etc.  I have tried to link it to the Customer field, but since it occurs on load, the field isn't populated at the time.  I wrote some javascript to get the field value on change, but cannot figure out how to re-trigger the other SQL Requests.  Any ideas?

I have also tried to use the external content type connector and list lookup, but since it's an external list list lookup doesn't work and the external content type doesn't allow me to filter based on the criteria.

I tried creating panels and disabling until something else was filled out, but that also doesn't work.  User wants real time data, so workflow is not an option.  This is easily achieved in InfoPath

Thanks

Cascading on the SQL control isn't yet available out of the box, but it's a feature that has been mentioned in the past to be coming in the not too distant future.

Hi Chris,

I understand your pain as I like to say "There is always a solution, but all solutions come with price". Now live data retrieving and filtering from external data sources in Nintex Forms always comes with big price. Because you need to code javascript. Now i have one project witch needs to do a search from SQL data base depending on fields in the form. So i came up with custom restful websrvice and some javascript in the form.

How it works:

User fills the data in the form and triggers the search. Then my webservice calls SQL procedure and retireves data array in JSON back to the form and then i parse that data and pre-populate the dropdown field.

It is not hard, but you need to have experience in using javascript and coding webservices and at least once did something similar in Nintex forms. So thats how i see thet this solution could be achieved. Happy coding

Hi Everyone,

I wrote a quick blog on something similar using the SQL Request controls for Cascading Dropdowns. The core question here should be covered within the functionality of the SQL Control at this point though. On-Click, the additional SQL Request controls should populate the respective data. Let me know if you're seeing any odd behavior with this one.
