I have given permissions to user using Set Item Permissions action. However, when I tried giving permission to column which has SP groups then it set with NULL. Check below screen. Is it feasible to set item level permissions to SP group using Set Item Permissions?
Note, I am creating site column e.g. Approvers (which accept Users and People both), added this column to list and then using it in Nintex.

Set Permission to group is feasible.
I just tried your example with a site column and a list column containing group name and it works.
Could you try to get your column value to a variable and historize your variable just to be sure of his value ?
