Hi,
A Datafield is a value that is used by the workflow/process/event and so forth, this is normally just used within an workflow activity.
A SmartObject is basically an easily accessible SQL database table. If you have a look in SQL Management Studio, you will find your exisiting SmartObjects under the K2 DB as tables.
