Nintex Workflow Impact on SharePoint 2010 and 2013 Workflow Ending

Since it has been announced that Microsoft is officially ending support for SharePoint 2010 Workflows in November 2020 and SharePoint 2013 Workflows being disabled for new tenants in SharePoint Online...What is the impact to Nintex Classic Workflows as they show up as SharePoint 2013 Workflows in SharePoint Designer?

Re: Nintex Workflow Impact on SharePoint 2010 and 2013 Workflow Ending

Of note:

Aug 1st, SP2010 Workflows in O365 will be turned off for newly created tenants. Nov 1st, it will be turned off for everyone.

Starting in November 2020, SharePoint 2013 workflows will be turned off by default for new tenants. Microsoft will provide a PowerShell script to let customers to activate the SharePoint 2013-based workflow engine for tenant as needed.

SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013-based workflows will continue to be supported for on-premises SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint 2019 Server platforms until 2026.

Re: Nintex Workflow Impact on SharePoint 2010 and 2013 Workflow Ending

Note that Nintex Workflow for Office 365 uses SharePoint 2013 workflows.

The deprecation of SharePoint 2010 workflow has no impact to Nintex Workflow for Office 365. Please see article - Nintex Workflow for Office 365 not impacted by SharePoint 2010 workflow deprecation.

With regards to SharePoint 2013 workflow

  • Existing customers will not be impacted
  • Office 365 Tenants provisioned before 1st November 2020 will not be impacted
  • Office 365 Tenants provisioned after 1st November 2020 will need to activate SharePoint 2013-based workflow engine via a PowerShell script before they can use Nintex Workflow for Office 365 (we are exploring options to see if there are alternatives to the PowerShell script)

Re: Nintex Workflow Impact on SharePoint 2010 and 2013 Workflow Ending

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for the info. I have one question.

Microsoft have stated the following - "This retirement doesn't apply to SharePoint 2013 workflows. SharePoint 2013 workflows will remain supported, but will be retired at some point in the future; we recommend that you migrate to Power Automate or other supported solutions, such as those from Preferred members of our Microsoft 365 Business Apps Partner Program".

Does this mean we need to start thinking about migrating SharePoint Online workflows to NWC?
