Quest Pre-Migration Technical Best Practices

Quest Migration Technical Pre-Requisites

  • A Global or SharePoint Administrator account must be used in order to perform full migrations. An account with less privileges will only be able to perform a limited set of migrations.
    • Quest Essentials requests certain user roles to starts and successfully finish hyper migration or hyper backup jobs. These administrative accounts are required when connecting to the tenant, to each site collection, user’s OneDrives, Office 365 groups, Microsoft Teams sites, etc. In order to connect to all these resources, you must be either a Global Administrator or a SharePoint Administrator. If you use an Exchange Administrator or Billing Administrator, or any other user role, the Migration will fail. This is because Essentials will not be able to access the target site collection in order to upload content and/or the azure job would be restricted by Office 365.
    • For more information, please review the Quest technical product documentation.
  • SharePoint Online site structure pre-created
    • Only required if 3rd party apps need to be installed
  • Nintex Workflow and Forms for Office 365 apps installed
  • Migration Profile updated to include Workflows and Forms at site and list scope

Nintex Technical Pre-Requisites

  • Nintex Workflow and Forms for Office 365 apps installed
  • Service account provisioned
    • Ideally with Office 365 Global Admin of SharePoint Admin permissions
    • If a Nintex Administrator and Workflow Publishers has been enabled in the SharePoint Online tenant, the service account must be listed under Workflow Publishers

Pre-Migration Environment Validation Test

It is recommended that a simple validation test is run prior to executing your SharePoint Online migration with Nintex Workflow and Forms. This will ensure that your service account has access to build and publish workflows in your SharePoint Online environment, so you do not encounter errors during the full migration. The steps below outline the process for running the validation test:

  1. Deploy the Nintex Workflow and Forms for Office 365 apps within a SharePoint Online test site
    • For a tutorial on how to deploy the Nintex Workflow and Forms for Office 365 apps, you can review that here
  2. Open the Nintex Workflow for Office 365 app with the migration service account
  3. Build and publish a basic workflow that logs a message to the workflow history list
    • This will ensure that the migration service account has permission to successfully publish workflows during the future migration
  4. Execute the test workflow in SharePoint Online and ensure that it completes successfully.

With the validation that the migration service account can publish and execute workflows within SharePoint Online, you should now be set to start planning and executing your full SharePoint migration.
