Task status not changing from Available to Open

I have a process that has a default client event with the following destination rule options: Plan per Destination - All at once, Specify number of slots - 1, Resolves roles and groups to user, Keep roles synchronized. The process can go to an individual user or a role. In either case, when the user clicks on the worklist item to open it, the status does not change from Available to Open. Also other people are able to access the worklist items at the same time. The expected behavior is that the status should change to Open for the user who opened the item and Allocated for other users in the role. Any ideas?

When the user opens the worklist item, are they directed to a Smartforms task form? If so then the only thing I can think to check is that on the form initialize rule the "open a worklist item" statement is being executed.
