User Authentification

I have an application that is just used on a small scale at the moment and uses our active directory to authenticate users. But this requires our IT support to set them up on Directory.  Going forward as more users start to use the application using the active directory is not sustainable. Can anbody offer an advice on how to set up a user authjentication for the application that will allow new users to register, reset passwords and disable accounts not used for a specific period.
