I am not able to create groups and assign tasks to them in K2. I use K2 designer and SharePoint 2013.

HI,
By groups do you mean k2 roles or active directory groups. You should be able to create roles by going to the workspace, click on the k2 server node and there is a secition for roles. CLick on add role item button and add users tot hat role. I dont think yo cna create active directory groups through k2 though.

thanks.. its helpful. i also want to know how i can make use of sharepoint groups. is it possible to use sharepoint groups in K2. this way i shall assign the task to sharepoint groups.

I have not used sharepoints groups for task assignments myself but I have read that it is possible. You just have to configure it as a gorup provider in the workspace like this article says: https://help.k2.com/onlinehelp/k2blackpearl/userguide/4.6.6/webframe.html#group_providers.html
