I've got a workflow that has a couple of sub-workflow steps. Obviously when the sub-workflows are running the main workflow pauses until they complete and pass control back to the main workflow.
One of the sub workflows failed. I've sorted out the issue but if I restart the sub-workflow will the main workflow "un-pause" and continue when this finishes, or do I need to cancel everything and restart the main workflow?

you have to stop everything and restart main workflow.
good practice is to keep track of whole process across all the (sub)workflows in a list status/flag field.
main workflow should be designed then to consider that status and let the process continue where it left off.
