the SMTP service does not have to be installed on the K2.net server - you can point it to another machine where the SMTP service is running. You can either do this at install time or change the value in the K2server.config file after installing K2.net.
You can also use datafields, hard-coded values or string table entries to specify the SMTP server name at runtime. This is useful if you have different SMTP servers in the different environments where the K2 process will be executed.
NOTE: some SMTP security settings or Anti-Virus could have an adverse effect when K2 server tries to send emails - in this case, I find it's usually easiest to search for solutions to the problem on Google.
