Prepare for Success
You must have the following SharePoint account permissions to complete this step: Edit
Creating Your First Form
1. Create a SharePoint list
Open a SharePoint site where you want to create the list, click the Settings icon on the upper right, and then click Site Contents. Click Add an App. Select Custom list and then give your list a name, such as “Travel Request Form”.
Next, create the following list columns using the indicated column type:
- Employee – People or Group
- Department – Lookup
- Cost Center – Lookup
- Start Date – Date and Time
- End Date – Date and Time
The travel destination list column will be set up later. This column will be a repeating section, and you will be able to view the outcome in the item itself. If you want to jump into the steps for creating a Destination Repeating section, you can skip to the next article Build your first Nintex Form - Part 2 of 3 (repeating sections).
2. Open a Nintex form
Click the List tab and then select Nintex Forms in the ribbon.
Choose the option for the forms designer you want: classic or responsive. The following walkthrough assumes the use of the classic forms designer.
A pre-populated form opens up on the forms designer.
The first thing to do is remove the Title Label control and Single Line of Text control since we don’t need them on this form. Right-click each control and select Delete.
3. Configure the Employee People control
Now we want to configure the “Employee” People control so that the form recognizes who the person is and they are not required to fill in that information themselves.
Double-click the People control to open the dialog box. For Default value source, click the drop down arrow and select Expression.
For Default Value, click the Insert Reference icon.
Select Current User in the Common tab. Click Ok and then Save the control.
4. Preview the form
You can preview the form to see how the form works. On the ribbon, click Preview and then Generate Preview. You can see that the Employee field has already been populated. When you hover over the name, it contains all their information too.
5. Publish the form
Now you can save and publish your first form.
