Summary:

After a migration, you may see an issue where you are not able to open: Central Administration >Manage Nintex Workflow > Setup Database, instead you are getting a correlation ID and error "Object reference is not set to an instance of an object."

Product:

All Workflow Products

Symptom:

When you are trying to access Central Administration >Manage Nintex Workflow > Setup Database, you get a correlation ID and message: "Object reference is not set to an instance of an object."

Cause:

Outdated connection string that contains invalid server name or database.  This could be an old server connection.  Or you may have old server name in the Nintex Configuration Database table dbo.Databases.

Answer/Solution:

To fix this issue verify first that the connection sting is the correct server and correct database name:

#Using SharePoint 2013 Management Shell

$farm = Get-SPFarm;
$farm.properties["NW2007ConfigurationDataBase"];

You will see similar output if you have a connection:

And the server and database is correct skip the next step:

If you see that the string is incorrect, run these commands:

$farm = Get-SPFarm;
$farm.properties["NW2007ConfigurationDataBase"];
$farm.properties["NW2007ConfigurationDataBase"] = “”;
$farm.Update();

Then try again in Central Administration > Manage Nintex Workflow > Setup Database if it works you are good to go, if not:

Go to your SQL database, find the Nintex Configuration database, expand table to dbo.Databases

If the server name is incorrect, then you need to run the stored procedure "dbo._PrepareForNewEnvironment" this will update the server name and other items to the new environment.

Then try again in Central Administration >Manage Nintex Workflow > Setup Database, should now be able to open that page.
